Sanayileşen Batı’nın Denizcilik ve Gemicilik Teknolojisinde Yaşanan Gelişmelerin 19. Yüzyıl Osmanlı Denizcilik ve Gemicilik Teknolojisine ve Ticaretine Yansımaları

İlk kez İngiltere’de ortaya çıkan Sanayi Devrimi ile başlayan süreç, Osmanlı’nın gerileme dönemine denk gelmiş olup bu süreç, hemen hemen her alanda Osmanlı Devleti’ni de etkilemiştir. Osmanlı’da, Batı’daki sanayileşme sürecinin etkisinin hissedildiği alanlardan biri de denizcilik ve gemicilik alanında olmuştur. Sanayileşmenin itici gücü olan buhar gücünün gemilerde kullanılabilir hale gelmesi, denizcilik ve gemicilik teknolojisini bir adım ileri taşıyarak, ulaşım ve ticarette bu teknolojiden yararlanabilme olanağı yaratmıştır. Özellikle 19. yüzyılda, bu teknolojinin geliştirildiği ülkeler, bu gelişme bağlamında önemli avantajlar kazanmışlardır. Batı’da bu gelişmeler yaşanırken, zaten gerileyiş içinde olan Osmanlı Devleti ise, denizcilik ve gemicilik teknolojisinde gerçekleşen gelişmeleri takip etmede Batı’nın gerisinde kalmıştır. Çalışmamızda amaçlanan da, bu durumun temel nedenleri üzerinde durmak ve Batı’daki denizcilik ve gemicilik teknolojisindeki gelişmelerin Osmanlı Devleti’nin denizcilik ve gemicilik teknolojisi üzerinde ne gibi etkiler yarattığını, ayrıca bu gelişmelerin Osmanlı deniz ulaşımı ve ticaretine nasıl yansıdığını incelemektir. Literatür taraması sonucunda elde edilen bilgiler doğrultusunda, Osmanlı dönemi ile ilgili olarak bu alanda yapılan çalışmalara bir katkı sağlanması da amaçlanmıştır.

The period starting with the Industrial Revolution which initially appeared in England coincided with the decline stage of the Ottomans and the Empire was influenced in almost all aspects. One of the fields of industrialization period in the west which influenced Ottomans was Maritime and Navigation. Turning steam power of the industrialization into boosting vessels took Maritime and navigation a step further and provided opportunity to benefit from that technology. Especially in the 19th century, the countries in which this technology was developed gained leverage in the context of industrialization. Unlike mentioned developments in the west, Ottoman Empire, having a period of decline, fell behind in following the latest developments in Maritime and Navigation. In this study we aimed to analyse the main reasons of this condition, the influences of the western developments in Maritime and Navigation on Ottomans’ Maritime and Navigation technology, and the reflections of these developments on the Empire’s marine transportation and trade. Scanning the literature, we also aim to make a contribution to the related field on Ottoman studies.
