Content of Tolstoy's (D.1910) Hadith Selection

We can benefit from social sciences to understand hadiths and to grasp their universal significance. One of them is literature. As a matter of fact, the Arab writer Câhız (d.255/869) saved a hadith called "Umar's sermon" in his literature book because he found it literary. At the beginning of 1900 the Russian literati Tolstoy reaches the English version of the book ‘The Hadiths of Muhammad’. This work is a hadith book written by Abdullah Me'mun Sühreverdî (d.1935) in English and published in 1905. It is to translate the hadiths originally in Arabic into English, to enable those who speak English to access that information. In religious terminology, it is called communion. In the 19th century, the enlightened of Muslim countries, whose people fell into a colonial state, produced works in the dominant language. One of them took place in India, which was a British colony. Abdullah Me'mun Suhrawardi is a young lawyer from India who was educated in England. Tolstoy selected 93 of the nearly 450 texts in this book and translated them into Russian and published them in 1909. The selection of nearly 100 texts that Tolstoy, who has a philosophical view as well as being a author, made before 1910 under the name of ‘Hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad that are not included in the Qur’an is important for us. Do Tolstoy’s (death 1910) hadith selections give us an opportunity to understand the hadiths and their importance in the universal dimension? There are 93 texts in the translation from Russian to Turkish. When the English version of the selected book was published in the 1940s, it is called ‘We re-translated 150 of the 451 hadiths in the original publication and deleted 35 of which we could not find the original Arabic.’ What would the 35 differences be? That’s why we cannot find some texts translated from Russian to Turkish in the original English text. However, Tolstoy has benefited from the book published in 1905 that auditions he published in 1909; made elections. Based on all these problems, what could be our method? We will try to determine of the 93 texts, which subjects they attach importance to based on the ‘keywords’. We will try to reveal what these features and beauties can be, based on the texts as much as possible.

Hadisleri anlama ve evrensel boyutta önemini kavrama konusunda sosyal bilimlerden yararlanabiliriz. Bunlardan birisi de edebiyattır. Nitekim Arap edebiyatçısı Câhız (ö.255/869) “Hz. Ömer’in hutbesi” olarak geçen bir hadisi, edebiyatla ilgili kitabında, edebî bulduğu için kaydetmiştir. Rus edebiyatçısı Tolstoy 1900’ün başlarında “Hz. Muhammed’in Hadisleri” adlı kitabın İngilizcesine ulaşır. Bu eser, Abdullah Me’mun Sühreverdî’nin (ö.1935) İngilizce olarak yazıp 1905’de yayınlattığı bir hadis kitabıdır. Orijinali Arapça olan hadisleri İngilizceye çevirmek, İngilizce bilenlerin o bilgilere ulaşabilme imkânı sağlamaktır. Dini terminolojide bunun adı, tebliğdir. 19. yüzyılda sömürge durumuna düşen halkı Müslüman ülkelerin aydınları hâkim dilde eserler vermişlerdir. Bunlardan biri de İngiliz sömürgesi olan Hindistan’da gerçekleşmiştir. Abdullah Me’mun Sühreverdî ise Hindistanlı olup İngiltere’de eğitim görmüş genç bir avukattır. Tolstoy, bu kitapta bulunan 450 civarındaki metinden 93 tanesini seçerek Rusça ’ya çevirir ve 1909 yılında yayınlar. Edebiyatçı olmanın yanında felsefi yönü de bulunan Tolstoy’un 1910 öncesinde “Hazreti Muhammed’in Kur’an‘a Girmeyen Hadisleri” adıyla yaptığı 100’e yakın metin seçkisi bizim için önem arz etmektedir. Tolstoy’un (ö.1910) hadis seçkileri acaba hadislerin anlama ve evrensel boyuttaki önemini kavrama konusunda bize bir imkân verir mi? Rusçadan Türkçeye yapılan tercümede 93 metin bulunmaktadır. Seçki yapılan kitabın İngilizcesi 1940’larda yayınlandığında “Orijinal yayındaki 451 hadisten 150'sini yeniden tercüme ettik ve orijinal Arapçayı bulamadığımız 35'ini sildik.” denilmektedir. Aradaki 35 fark ne olacaktır? Bu yüzden Rusçadan Türkçeye çeviride olan bazı metinleri İngilizce aslında bulamıyoruz. Oysa Tolstoy 1909’da yayınladığı seçmelerde, 1905’de yayınlanan kitaptan yararlanmış; seçkiler yapmıştı. Bütün bu sorunlardan hareketle, yöntemimiz ne olabilir? 93 metnin, anahtar kelimelerden hareketle, hangi konulara önem verdiğini belirlemeye gayret edeceğiz. Biz bu özellik ve güzelliklerin ne olabileceğini, olabildiğince metinlerden hareketle ortaya koymaya çalışacağız.
